The Journey Begins

Tomorrow is is the big day.  Our family heads for a week in Germany and then a month in Rome.  The days leading up to today have been filled with packing, pre-paying bills, making arrangements for maintenance, hiring a housesitter and a pet sitter and preparing to be gone from work for five weeks.  If we didn't need a vacation, we need one now to recover from all that preparing for vacation!  We did this once before in 2009.  If you want to read about our last adventure--ini London--at Brits For a While.  The reasons we go abroad haven't changed much.  Our children live in a small, safe, rural community which is overwhelmingly white and underwhelmingly blessed with culture and history.  That works for us, but we also know that if our girls follow the path of must college graduates, they are going to need to be equipped for a world that is much more cosmopolitan, multicultural and maybe just a little bit intimidating.  Our adventures abroad give us the opportunity to share with our children "the world beyond" and to spend quality time immersing them and ourselves in all the wonderful things this plant has to offer. We blog for two reasons: to create a record of our adventures for our own amusement and to share our stories with our family and friends.  We invite you to live vicariously, and we hope you will have an adventure of your own someday.
